Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Business Development Manager to join a Client Solutions team in London. This role will report directly to the Head of Client Solutions.


The Role

The successful candidate will work as a senior member of the company's Marketing and Business Development team to support the delivery of excellent client service to most important clients. Implement and evolve marketing and business development strategy for risk focused client solutions and manage a Business Development Manager who will report directly into this role.

Key Responsibilities

Client solutions management

  • Develop and maintain a robust understanding of the risk issues landscape and Freshfields’ associated technical legal capabilities and network of expertise

  • Design, implement and evolve the marketing and business development strategy for risk focused client solutions

  • Manage marketing and business development programme for risk focused client solutions, with a priority emphasis on selling them to the most important clients

  • Collaborate with lead partners, Client Service, Client and Sectors, Global Markets and Knowledge, to develop initiatives which create / capitalise on business development opportunities for risk focused solutions

  • Manage one Business Development Manager, ensuring that they are providing excellent support to the designated client solutions partners / fee earners

  • Bring a global perspective to the development and delivery of client solutions approach in risk

Market points of competitive strength and differentiation

  • Work with partners and Knowledge teams to articulate why risk capabilities are better than competitors’, ensuring we capitalise on relationships, experience & know-how

  • Bring together the capabilities that sit within the firm’s Practice Groups to articulate and market integrated solutions to client needs

  • Deliver marketing to promote capabilities with impact, e.g. seminars

  • Work with partners and Knowledge teams to create and organise training for in-house teams

  • Work with the wider global client solutions team to ensure a compelling and holistic risk offering to clients, across jurisdictions

Client relationship management

  • Own client relationship management support for a number of the most important clients

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of those clients, based on building an ongoing understanding of their strategy and issues through research and current awareness

  • Drive client planning and reviews

  • Develop ideas for discussion with client Relationship Partners ideas with a view to further developing relationships with individual clients and identifying business opportunities

  • Instigate client feedback at pitch, mandate / project and relationship levels

  • Develop bespoke content programmes for clients and target content appropriately

  • Track financial and relationship outcomes (e.g. opportunities to pitch / pipeline management)


  • Work with the Clients and Sectors and centralised Pitch Centre teams on high-value pitch opportunities to increase probabilities of winning

  • Collaborate with centralised Pitch Centre teams to ensure there is a good understanding and knowledge base of capabilities and experience related to risk client solutions in support of creating compelling pitches

Deliver business plan initiatives / drive profitable revenue growth

  • Develop plans, in collaboration with Client and Sectors and Global Markets teams, to raise awareness of risk client solutions

  • Analyse which clients should be targeted in relation to risk client solutions

  • Report on progress


Skills & Experience

  • Degree educated with a minimum of 2:1 final grade, with post-graduate legal and/or marketing qualifications

  • Marketing and business development experience in a law firm or professional services context

  • Experience working in or in relation to global risk related issues or similarly complex technical services

  • Experience of working in an international business environment that requires buy-in and engagement of senior management or partners and working across cultures successfully

  • Proven track record of successful client relationship management and winning new business

  • Experience of working with multi-locational teams, e.g. multi-office initiatives and leveraging centralized resources
