Seeking: Senior Analyst to join the Governance & Sustainability Team of n Edinburgh based investment management firm.


The Role

The Governance & Sustainability Team researches companies’ approaches to managing environmental, social and governance issues, votes at shareholder meetings globally, engages with companies on these issues and provides investment managers with company-specific analysis. The team completes portfolio, sector and thematic reviews, all in collaboration with investment managers as well as meet clients on a regular basis to discuss all of the above.

You will provide tailored research and analysis to investment teams, undertaking company and client engagement on ESG issues and provide oversight and delivery of specified proxy votes as required.


Key Responsibilities

This role is accountable for a range of key deliverables:

  • Acting as designated G&S analyst to a number of investment strategies, including Portfolio Construction Group responsibilities and undertaking research and engagement as required

  • Overseeing a designated proxy voting region

  • Line management of analyst(s) as required

  • Membership of the departmental management team, with shared accountability for the performance and development of the Governance & Sustainability function

  • Analysing company meeting proposals and recommending voting and engagement strategies for company general meetings in accordance with the firm and clients’ governance and sustainability guidelines.

  • Undertaking corporate governance and sustainability research for the investment teams, focussing on relevant and material ESG issues that have the potential to impact the investment case for holding a company’s shares or bonds. This may include pre-buy, sector, and thematic research as required.

  • Engaging with the management and board of company holdings on relevant governance and sustainability issues, collaborating with relevant industry peers and associations where appropriate.

  • Attending meetings with clients and other relevant external stakeholders as part of communicating how governance and sustainability are integrated into the firm’s investment and research processes.

  • Undertaking relevant departmental projects and supporting external communications as required.

  • Portfolio Construction Group responsibilities for designated strategies, as required

  • Oversight and ‘second level’ sign off of complex or significant proxy votes, including oversight of a designated voting region

  • Representing the team in internal meetings and steering groups

  • Representing at firm-wide client meetings and external forums, with the ability to talk to all work on Governance & Sustainability, in addition to individual strategies

  • Undertaking additional training and development as required to build and maintain specialist technical or investment knowledge; this may be required to meet evolving role or regulatory requirements


Skills & Experience

  • Educated to degree level

  • Relevant (ESG) advanced degree desirable but not essential

  • IMC desirable but not essential

  • Experience and/or qualifications in a related field

  • Emerging markets ESG experience highly desirable

  • Climate change/ Carbon Risk investment analysis experience highly desirable

  • Building strong long term relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders

  • Strong analytical skills with excellent attention to detail and high level of accuracy

  • Read, understand and interpret complex information

  • Work independently using initiative

  • Confidence in forming own views, discussing ideas and influencing others

  • Monitor and adjust priorities on an on-going basis whilst managing tight deadlines

  • Confidence to challenge stakeholders constructively, debate and articulate views with credibility

  • Comfortable working with an open mind in an emerging industry that is growing rapidly
