We are on the hunt for an Operational Risk Consultant to join our client’s investment management firm in Edinburgh


About The Role

The Risk and Compliance department supports the development of the business and promotes value creation by:

  • helping management to identify, assess and manage their key risks in line with the requirements of the enterprise risk management framework (ERMF);

  • advising the business on global regulatory requirements and identifying and assessing the business impact of changes to regulations;

  • and providing assurance that effective processes and controls are in place to manage the key business risks and to ensure the Company is operating in compliance with its regulatory requirements.

Reporting to the Operational Risk Manager the role holder will be responsible for supporting the day to day management and delivery of the operational risk framework across the group. The position requires the ability to challenge and confidently manage the business with a particular focus on; risk event investigation, risk assessment, ICAAP, risk reporting, risk education for the business and the delivery of initiatives to help enhance the Operational Risk team and broader Risk and Compliance function.

The role will provide significant exposure to senior stakeholders across all areas of the business within a leading and highly successful asset management company. The ideal candidate will have a desire to learn and develop and a willingness to complete both business as usual and new and challenging work.

Ideally candidates will have demonstrable knowledge of operational risk frameworks gained through working within the financial services industry; however, candidates with a firm understanding of asset management, but with less direct risk experience may also be considered.


Key Responsibilities

  • Working closely with the business, identify and investigate operational risk events, ensuring root cause analysis and control assessments are performed. This will involve undertaking 'deep dive' reviews on significant and complex events.

  • Assistance provided to the Operational Risk Manager to ensure that all aspects of the Operational Risk framework are effectively managed and developed including the identification of key risks, quantification of their impact and integration with current ICAAP processes

  • Assist the Operational Risk Manager with team oversight where required.

  • Liaise with employees across the group, to ensure successful embedment of the operational risk framework.

  • Provide support, education and training to the business to build risk awareness and culture across the group.

  • Create, maintain and develop positive working relationships with all stakeholders, internal and external, to support the achievement of key outcomes.

  • Keep up to date with regulatory requirements and industry best practice in operational risk management.

  • Contribute to the delivery of risk management information for use by a number of stakeholders including the Board, Risk committees, clients and external bodies.


Skills & Experience

  • A strong understanding of operational risk frameworks and of the control environment surrounding asset management and operational risk, including reporting and analysis.   

  • Proven experience of facing off against front office, Distribution or Operations functions.

  • Detailed, methodical and accurate with an analytical and investigative approach to work

  • Highly effective Problem solving skills

  • Strong communicator with the ability to document processes in a concise but comprehensible style.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, experienced in presenting and communicating complex information in a variety of formats to all levels of seniority.

  • Work effectively as part of a team and ensures that best practice and knowledge is shared with others in the team.

  • Planning and organising, ability to work to deadlines and can effectively prioritise own workload to deliver in line with agreed timescale.


Desirable Experience

  • Experience of working in a risk within the financial services industry, preferably within an asset management company

  • Comfortable reporting at senior management level

  • Holds a compliance or investment qualification

  • Degree educated
