Job Description

Our client, a London based asset management firm, is currently looking to appoint an Investment Manager to join their busy team.

 

About The Role

The Discretionary Management Service (DMS) is a segregated investment management service, which applies the House Strategy to a series of risk graded portfolio models and offers this to financial advisers. The service offers an excellent and ‘Socially Responsible’ investment offering for clients and is invested in a combination of direct securities and third party funds. The team also runs the Managed Portfolio Service which is available on external platforms and is invested 100% in third party funds.

Portfolios are risk rated with lower risk strategies invested with a bias to fixed income and higher risk strategies invested with a bias to equities. All portfolios are actively managed, multi asset class and global in their outlook.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Investment Model Oversight Manager in providing independent assessment and challenge on model frameworks, assumptions, inputs and limitations.

  • Assist the Investment Model Oversight Manager in forming views over improvement of current model risk policy and governance and enhancing efficiency in its application.

  • Quantitative support across Investment Risk Oversight team broader activity.

  • Detailed analysis of various risk systems end to end. This includes but is not limited to:

    • Risk measures calculation methodologies.

    • Review of all risk system documentation.

    • Review of all system capabilities and potential configurations.

    • Data accuracy and depth (equity time series, yield curve data, volatility surfaces etc).

    • Understanding of associated derivatives pricing models.

    • Stress testing methodology.

  • Deep dive into VaR back-test overshoots. Advise on P&L drivers and associate to risk factors and modelling taking place within the risk system.

  • Detailed analysis of other internally or externally developed Investment tools.

  • Testing of new functionalities/models within risk systems.

  • Preparing ad-hoc reports for senior management and sub-committees.

  • Follow-up with risk system vendors and internal stakeholders with regards to identified issues. Ensure improvements are delivered within estimated timeframes.

  • Some good house-keeping duties, such as ensuring models have appropriate documentation and validation evidence in place from both 1st and 2nd lines of defence point of view.

 

Person Specification

  • CISI Diploma and Chartered Status.

  • Minimum requirement level 6 under the Retail Distribution Review.

  • Holds a current Statement of Professional Standing.

  • Has between 6-10 years Investment experience.

  • Excellent communication skills: written, verbal and presentational.

  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Ability to work under pressure

  • Excellent attention to detail.

 

Skills & Experience

  • Proven track record in successfully working with financial advisers and developing relationships built on high levels of service and trust.

  • Strong investment background, in global multi-asset class investing and preferably have worked in the UK private client arena.

  • Good direct stock picking experience and fund knowledge across different markets.

  • Commitment to a centralised House aligned investment process:

    • Linking risk profile to investment solution

    • Strategic and tactical asset allocation

    • Research and security selection value-add

    • Risk and oversight governance

  • Proposition engagement skills, helping to ensure the range of different investment services on the desk are well reviewed and well presented.

  • Strong understanding of the regulatory framework relevant to a UK wealth management business.

  • The drive to support growth in a dynamic team with a high degree of collegiality.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

 

Key Competencies

  • Good understanding of the macro-economic environment and the ability to relay the company’s macro-economic view of the world and how that translates into our portfolios of investments.

  • The ability to speak authoritatively about individual companies at a level appropriate for the private client audience.

  • The ability to relate the investment process to the building of the portfolios and explain the suitability of the portfolio to the adviser and/or client.

  • Good networking/client relationship skills.

 

Regulatory Responsibilities

  • Understanding of regulatory environment generally and specifically relevant to private clients.

  • Adhere to processes and procedures, taking into account of good outcomes for clients.

  • Maintain highest standards of TCF.

  • Adhere to principles of conduct risk.

  • Ensure no issues in terms of conflict of interest.

  • Ensure CPD is kept up to date.
