About The Role

The firm's Independence Team is responsible for ensuring that the company is in compliance with the auditor Independence rules and regulations imposed by external regulatory bodies (e.g. FRC, SEC, IESBA, EU) and by the company itself in relation to the conduct of the firm’s auditing business. This also includes ensuring that new audit clients and engagements accepted by the firm do not result in an Independence conflict.

The Independence Team (led by the Independence Partner for UK and Ireland) forms part of the UK&I Risk Management Group (“RM”) which reports directly to senior management. There are currently 20 members in the Independence Team (including conflicts) and a combined total of around 50 individuals within RM; all are located in the London office and are supported by approximately 20 individuals in the Global Delivery Services functions in India and Poland.

The Assurance service line is a core business and the purpose of the Independence rules and guidelines is to protect our ability to perform an audit with both objectivity and integrity. Breaching these rules can have serious implications including the loss of clients, fines or other sanctions as well as reputational damage.

Changes in the audit market as a result of a new regulatory landscape and the firm's 2020 growth strategy has placed significant additional demands on the Independence Team. These include the UK/EU imposition of mandatory audit firm tendering/rotation for companies, an ambitious firm acquisition strategy, increased go-to-market initiatives (e.g. alliances) and substantially increased consultations as a result of the firm’s growth. The Independence Team needs to respond to these challenges and ensure it can fully support the company.


Key Responsibilities

You will be part of a team of 4 working closely with the senior leadership. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Taking a lead role in the Independence audit pursuit team

  • Assisting with Independence due diligence activities on audit tenders, acquisitions and initial public offerings/listings. This will include direct interaction with senior partners and stakeholders, service lines and account teams

  • Providing support to pursuit teams involved in audit tenders in relation to identifying and resolving Independence conflicts during the proposal stage.

  • Discussing and helping resolve complex situations and issues, consulting with Independence executives and others, as appropriate

  • Managing the audit pursuit pipeline, allocating appropriate Independence support to tenders, accordingly

  • Liaison with local Assurance and Business Development contacts to monitor the Audit tender pipeline and understand upcoming activity/resourcing requirements

  • Reviewing Independence procedures completed by the pursuit/audit team prior to senior leadership review/sign off

  • Keeping up-to-date with emerging knowledge, trends and lessons learned in Independence and how these will evolve in response to changes in the regulatory environment.

  • Ability to demonstrate a detailed level of technical/subject matter expertise in this specialist field

  • Handling a broad range of Independence consultations and help resolve complex situations

  • Demonstrate a proactive and commercial approach to resolving complex and difficult Independence challenges while ensuring compliance with the internal/external regulations.

  • Developing connections with the Independence network (Global, EMEIA, US, Global Shared Service Centre) and service line quality teams

  • Supporting Independence Directors and Senior Managers on other Independence related initiatives/campaigns 

Skills & Experience

  • The ability to communicate with colleagues at all levels including delivering tough messages to senior leaders within the firm

  • Presentation skills

  • Ability to build strong working relationships with service lines and develop an excellent understanding of their business

  • Capable of working using own initiative, with excellent communication and organisational skills

  • Ability to work to pre-determined deadlines and meet objectives under pressure

  • Service orientated and commercially-minded at solving problems

  • A working knowledge of Independence rules and regulations

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Proven leadership and team management skills

  • Strong project management skills and proficiency at driving projects to a close

  • Good analytical and interpretation skills, the ability to think strategically and handle complex concepts

  • Experience of working in a large, matrixed organisation

  • Ideally, you’ll also have

  • A working knowledge of FRC & SEC Independence rules and their interpretation (highly desirable)

  • Proactive and commercial approach to resolving complex and difficult Independence challenges while ensuring compliance with the internal/external regulations

  • Experience working in a professional or financial services organisation
