Job Description

A London based financial services provider is now looking to hire an Environmental and Social Responsibility Executive.

 

The Role

Following a period of strategic growth, our client is looking to recruit a further Environmental and Social (E&S) Executive as a consequence of internal promotions. The Executive’s primary role will be to support the E&S team to ensure that the requirements of the company’s Code of Responsible Investing are met across the company’s three business lines (debt, equity and fund of funds).  Sector experience in one or more of the key sectors that the firm invests in (including specifically agribusiness, financial institutions and/ or infrastructure) would be particularly welcome, and fluency in French would also be an asset. An ability to travel for upto 50 days a year often at short notice is essential.

The Executive will work with other E&S team members, investment teams and other staff in the delivery of company’s mandate with a specific focus on the firm’s Code of Responsible Investing, and current Strategy (which as a focus on climate change, job quality and gender). The role will involve due diligence, portfolio monitoring, technical advice and value add to investees/ project sponsors, as well as participation in broader team related activities.

The ESR team works closely with investment teams at all stages of deal origination, assessment and management and are actively involved in the Investment Committee processes and decisions, as well as monitoring and support to investees/ clients throughout the investment period.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Participating in due diligence reviews of the E&S performance of prospective investees to: identify E&S risks and gaps in relation to company requirements and Code of Responsible Investing; identify opportunities where E&S interventions add value. This includes review of technical reports relating to E&S matters.

  • Commissioning, managing and reviewing E&S Due Diligence undertaken on behalf of the firm.

  • Preparing Action Plans for potential investees to mitigate E&S risks and add value.

  • Regularly monitoring the action plans and providing periodic evaluations of the E&S management and systems of investees.

  • Meeting with companies, institutions and fund managers as well as visiting portfolio companies as part of company’s due diligence and on-going portfolio monitoring.

  • Providing E&S training for internal investment teams and for investees.

  • Contributing to periodic reports on E&S matters for internal and external parties, including the Board and DFID.

  • Providing internal quality control, consistency reviews and implementation support to the investment team.

  • Mentoring and supporting the professional development of other staff.

  • Participating in the compilation of briefing materials, case studies and other documents to illustrate how responsible business practices and improvements on E&S matters contribute to business success.

 

Skills & Experience

  • Advanced degree (MSc or equivalent) in a relevant discipline: environmental science/ ecology; social sciences, economics, development studies or finance, or a similar area

  • At least four years’ work experience in a related field (ESG, sustainability, SRI), preferably within development finance, E&S consulting, banking or the investment industry.

  • Experience in investment geographies

  • Familiarity with the application of IFC Performance Standards to investments

  • Technical skills and experience in relation to one or more of the following are particularly welcome: labour and working conditions, waste and waste management, climate, water and gender.
