A London based financial services provider is now looking to hire an Environmental and Social Responsibility Associate.


The Role

Following a period of strategic growth, our client is looking to recruit an Environmental and Social (E&S) Associate as a consequence of internal promotions. The Associate’s primary role will be to support the E&S team to ensure that the requirements of the company Code of Responsible Investing are met across the company’s three business lines (debt, equity and fund of funds). The successful candidate will join a high performing and dedicated team of 18 individuals drawn from ES consulting, NGOs and ESG information service providers.

The Associate will work with other E&S team members, investment teams and other staff in the delivery of the firm’s mandate with a specific focus on the Code of Responsible Investing, and current Strategy (which as a focus on climate change, job quality and gender). Sector experience in one or more of the key sectors that the company invests in would be particularly welcome and an appetite and ability to travel for upto 50 days a year often at short notice is essential. The role will involve due diligence, portfolio monitoring, technical advice and value add to investees/ project sponsors, as well as participation in broader team related activities.

The ESR team works closely with investment teams at all stages of deal origination, assessment and management and are actively involved in the Investment Committee processes and decisions, as well as monitoring and support to investees/ clients throughout the investment period.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting the E&S Team with the due diligence (DD) of potential transactions including review of E&S Assessments and Audits, Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS) as well as other E&S /technical documents; commissioning specialist DD, drafting investment paper comments and assisting in negotiating E&S conditions.

  • Working with Investment, Development Impact and E&S Team, and with others within the company, to ensure that E&S requirements and policies (Code of Responsible Investing) are consistently applied.

  • Supporting the development and management of the ESR team’s communications and outreach materials (case studies, ESR reviews, etc)

  • Portfolio monitoring and providing evaluations of investment Annual Monitoring Reports. This will include logging annual monitoring reports, reviewing and assessing performance, monitoring of action plan items and follow up as necessary.

  • Maintaining the E&S deal pipeline and assisting the team by tracking deals by stage of approval and completion.

  • Assisting in the provision of E&S training and other support, both for internal investment teams and investees.

  • Assisting with the preparation of periodic reports on E&S matters for internal and external parties, including the Board and shareholder.

  • Participating in the compilation of case studies to illustrate how responsible business practices and improvements on E&S matters contribute to business success.

  • Supporting E&S value additionality programs (including the development and management of technical assistance, management of consultants and other duties as necessary).

  • Supporting ad hoc projects such as case studies and “lessons learnt” analysis, analysis of trends in assessing development impact particularly with relation to environmental and social matters.


Skills & Experience

  • Advanced degree (MSc or equivalent) in a relevant discipline: environmental science/ ecology; social sciences, economics, development studies or finance, or a similar area

  • At least two years’ work experience in a related field (ESG, sustainability, SRI), preferably within development finance, E&S consulting, banking or the investment industry.

  • Experience in investment geographies

  • Familiarity with the application of IFC Performance Standards to investments (ideally), and Knowledge of E&S issues as they apply to businesses operating in emerging markets / developing countries

  • Technical skills and experience in relation to one or more of the following are particularly welcome: labour and working conditions, waste and waste management, climate, water and gender.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage and prioritise a high and diverse workload with deliverables toward many stakeholders.

  • Enjoy working as part of a team, collaborating and coordinating where appropriate.

  • Good judgement and attention to detail

  • Candidates should be strongly motivated by development mission and ideally demonstrate some commitment to development or social goals through previous executive or non-executive activity
