Leadership Hires for an Investment Management giant
Under increasing UK regulatory scrutiny, Vanguard sought to bolster their Governance, Compliance and Privacy leadership team in London.
The challenge
Vanguard is an international investment management giant with a fast growing European presence. In recent years, they have invested heavily in building a leadership team across all areas of Corporate Governance, Compliance, Financial Crime and Risk. Lawson Chase were enlisted upon two leadershipsearches for Vanguard in London when the business sought to appoint a Head of Financial Crime (UK MLRO / CF11) and a European Head of European Privacy. Lawson Chase was tasked to work closely with the European Head of Compliance to identify senior individuals from competitor businesses within the buy-side who would be well placed to assume quite greenfield positions.
The solution
Recognising a trend that those who had previously spent several years with BlackRock, a core competitor, tended to fit well within Vanguard’s collaborative culture, we identified those who had assumed similar, senior roles within BlackRock previously as part of our shortlisting exercise for both roles. The preferred candidate for the MLRO/Head of Anti Financial Crime hire had previously been the Global AML Lead for BlackRock and the preferred candidate for the Head of European Privacy role was most recently BlackRock’s Global Head of Privacy & Data Protection for 7+ years. We supported Vanguard at all stages of the recruitment process including final negotiations to ensure that the preferred candidates were successfully appointed for both positions.
